The protection of new and emerging rights: views from China and Europe

One can get easily the impression that human rights are in many cases on the top of the agenda of political and cultural debates, and apparently everybody knows exactly what the topic is about. However, much of the debate is a matter of naming and shaming, countries and regions standing against each other without considering new complexities. One major topic is given by the fact that human rights are in actual fact not static, but part of the development, going hand in hand with the development of societies – individually and in relation to each other.

On the 22nd of October a conference is organised, taking place in Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany.

Members of our HRUG-group had been invited and will surely play a special role, contributing with the wealth of the experience.

The overall topic of the event is

The protection of new and emerging rights: views from China and Europe

Important is to consider that human rights must be understood in the light of the changes of our societies and their relation to each other; in particular issues as

  • the changes of the geopolitical order
  • the understanding of nature against the background of environmental threats
  • the challenges to humankind by development of digitisation and artificial intelligence
  • not least the new conditions, that define human existence: not least in the light of medical progress and the possibilities of genetic modification of human existence

are challenging our understanding.

While on the one hand these conditions and new developments must be seen is global, it is equally important to discuss the commonalities and differences, linked to different understanding of what human rights are and also linked to the different conditions under which they can be realised.
